Amber / yellow lights
- Engine management light — a fault code has been logged, could be minor or major
- Oil level low — top up as soon as possible, don't ignore it
- Tyre pressure warning — check and adjust pressures when safe to stop
- Glow plug light (diesel) staying on — get it scanned
Red lights
- Oil pressure warning — stop the car safely and switch off immediately
- Engine temperature warning — stop before the engine overheats
- Brake warning light — check fluid level, don't continue if the pedal feels off
- Battery / charging warning — get it checked before the car fails to start
Other common lights
- ABS warning light — brakes still work, but without anti-lock assistance
- Airbag warning light — a fault in the safety system, needs diagnosing
- DPF warning light (diesel) — the filter needs a regeneration drive or a clean
