MOT Checklist: What to Prepare
Use this checklist to prepare your vehicle before bringing it in for an MOT test
Lights
- Headlights (main and dipped beam)
- Brake lights
- Indicators (front and rear)
- Hazard warning lights
- Fog lights (if fitted)
- Number plate lights
- Reversing lights
Tyres & Wheels
- Tread depth minimum 1.6mm
- No cuts, bulges or damage
- Correct tyre size
- Matching tyres on same axle
- Wheel nuts secure
Brakes
- Brake pedal firm
- Handbrake holds
- No grinding or squealing
- Brake fluid level correct
Visibility
- Windscreen free of major chips
- Wipers clear screen effectively
- Washer fluid topped up
- All mirrors intact and secure
- Dashboard warning lights
Body & Structure
- Doors open and close properly
- Seatbelts work correctly
- No excessive rust or corrosion
- Exhaust secure with no leaks
- Fuel cap seals properly
Other Checks
- Horn works
- Steering moves freely
- No excessive play in steering
- Registration plates legible
- VIN number visible
Pro Tips
- 1.Book your MOT up to a month before expiry to give yourself time for repairs if needed
- 2.Clean your car - a dirty car can hide defects and make the tester's job harder
- 3.Check your dashboard for warning lights - many will cause an automatic fail
- 4.Ensure you have enough fuel in the tank for the emissions test
